Full circle as M&S opens new store in Cheetham Hill

This from the Natter

History turned full circle today when Marks & Spencer opened a new Simply Food store in Cheetham Hill – the location of its first store over a century ago.

M&S opened its brand new store at Manchester Fort Shopping Park, creating 80 new jobs.

The company was founded by Polish refugee Michael Marks and Thomas Spencer, a cashier from Yorkshire. Its first store opened in Cheetham Hill Road in 1894 and its first headquarters opened in Derby Street in 1901.

Store manager Pauline Minett said: “The first day has been fantastic so far,it’s great to have been so warmly welcomed back to Cheetham Hill.”
