One bad apple

Well at least one thing good has come out of the calling of the election.

The cider tax will fall away if Labour does not regain power. The 10 per cent increase in duty fell to the battle to get legislation through before Parliament is dissolved next Monday along with the 50p monthly levy on landline phone bills, the tax on holiday rental homes and the referendum on the voting system along with the phasing out the remaining hereditary peers from the House of Lords.

The wash up means that only outstanding measures that have cross-party agreement can reach the statute books. The Conservatives will be the heroes of the cider industry as only Labour has pledged to re introduce the tax when it finishes at the end of June
