Sunday's papers

A chance for the Sunday's to reflect on the week's events and time for more rumour this morning.

According to the Sunday Times the reshuffle has created a serious rift in the government, the paper says that

A Downing Street insider claims that Ed Balls “went nuclear” as the prime minister wavered over whether to make him chancellor – and threatened to stop cooperating with Lord Mandelson.

The Mail on Sunday meanwhile reveals that

Peter Mandelson's claim that Gordon Brown is doing a great job is in tatters after it was revealed that he called the Prime Minister 'insecure, self-conscious physically and emotionally, uncomfortable in his skin and angry' in a leaked email.

The Telegraph reveals that a co-ordinated plot by Cabinet ministers was behind the resignations last week that came close to forcing Gordon Brown to step down.Hazel Blears, James Purnell, John Hutton and Caroline Flint were part of a group of Blairites that met secretly for months and tried to co-ordinate last week’s resignations and intended to put Alan Johnson head of the party.

For the other papers it is a question of how long Brown can survive. The Independent says that

Gordon Brown faces a critical 24 hours to save his premiership, as Labour rebels threatened a second wave of attacks designed to unseat him from power.
adding that

With a make-or-break Monday looming, the Prime Minister attempted to rise above the danger back home yesterday when he attended D-Day commemorations in Normandy. He evoked the "Crisis? What crisis?" spirit of James Callaghan when he tried to dismiss the attempted coup as the normal "ups and downs in politics".

The Observer says that Brown faces two days that could seal his future as prime minister. If predictions that the British National party will gain at least one seat when the European Parliament election results are announced tonight are accurate, and the Express believes that he has

just four days to save his premiership, as Labour’s civil war rages.

The News of the World publishes a poll which reveals that

Senior Cabinet Ministers in Gordon Brown's new Government will lose their seats at a General Election - unless they ditch him.
A poll of voters in crucial constuencies shows SEVEN ministers who have backed the PM will be kicked out by the electorate.
