Saturday's papers

Caroline Flint shares the front pages with the Prime Minister this morning.

A Stileto in the heart of Gordon Brown says the Telegraph and says that

After being snubbed for a promotion, Caroline Flint, the Europe Minister, delivered the most personal attack yet on the beleaguered Prime Minister, accusing him of using her as "female window dressing" and of operating a "two-tier Government"

The revenge of a women scorned is the Mail's headline

Gordon Brown made it through the most tumultuous 24 hours in recent political history yesterday – only to be knifed by a jilted minister.

A stileto in the back says the Sun which reports that

last night she wrote to the PM: "I am extremely disappointed at your failure to have an inclusive Government. You have a two-tier Government - your inner circle and then the remainder of Cabinet.

Caroline Flint put herself at the head of the campaign to oust the Prime Minister after her gamble to hold out for a better job backfired.

Flint's resignation has almost overtaken the reshuffle and the devastating council losses, the Times says that

Gordon Brown survived to fight another day as he used a Cabinet reshuffle yesterday to bolster his battered authority while waiting for the full scale of Labour’s election losses to sink in.

Echoed in the Guardian whih also reports that

Labour rebels were regrouping tonight to mount a fresh assault on his leadership over the weekend in the wake of what are expected to be even worse European parliament election results, due to be announced on Sunday night. They were still maintaining that they could collect 70-80 signatures on a letter asking the prime minister to step down.

A reshuffle that Betray's weakness says the Independent

Until yesterday, the Prime Minister had surely hoped that by reshuffling his Cabinet he would be able to put behind him the losses in Thursday's elections, renew his Government's sense of purpose and stride out with fresh confidence towards the election that really matters. The next Cabinet line-up, announced in dribs and drabs through yesterday, even as the extent of Labour's wipe-out in county council elections was becoming clear, showed how comprehensively he had to jettison that plan.

The Express says quite simply that Brown has lost the plot

Clinging on to his job by his fingernails, he staved off a Cabinet coup by surrendering to virtual blackmail from senior ministers.
