The defeat over the Gurkha's shows
It is proof, if any were needed, that away from the economy the prime minister is consistently misjudging issues. His handling of MPs' expenses and the Gurkha - issues that are far from being the major questions of our age but which generate huge public emotion - suggest if nothing else that he is being badly advised.
Ed Balls and Peter Mandelson are both shrewd political strategists but are simply too busy to give day-to-day tactical advice.
It was strange watching Brown at question time earlier. He genuinely believed that the government's policy was correct,he handled his argument well and yet he was fundamentally wrong.
Shod ow defence secretary Liam Fox has just got it spot on on the BBC
the vote this afternoon had "moral implications" and it showed that the government was "fatally out of touch.
"The vote says to the Government that the current policy is regarded by the majority of people in Britain as unfair,"
