Government admits to closing 124 Sure Start centres since April 2010

The truth behind David Cameron's claim that he is committed to Sure Start has been exposed by his Government's own figures according to the Labour party.

Today's admission by the Government that 124 Children’s Centres have closed since April 2010 hardly bears the mark of a party that spoke of its commitment to Sure Start both before the last election and again in April 2011 before the last local elections.

Stephen Twigg, Labour's Shadow Education Secretary has said this afternoon that families will be worried that even more will close in future. Sure Start is one of Labour's proudest achievements, but this out of touch Tory-led Government is putting it at risk.

According to the Department for Education website, the net reduction of 124 children’s centres since April 2010 includes 6 closures with the remainder of the reduction being accounted for by local reorganisations such as the merger of two or more centres
