Orange revolution comes to an end in Ukraine

If a week is a long time in politics then so is six years.

The remarkable turn around in fortunes for the Ukrainian opposition leader Viktor F. Yanukovich if the exit figures from that country's election are correct represents a massive turn around for the pro Eastern looking leader.

Back in 2004,accused of election rigging and attempting to poison his nearest rival he was swept from power by the Orange revolution.

Then he was shunned as a bumbling Kremlin sidekick as the country demonstrated its way forward was with the West.

Six years later after much political and economic turmoil as well as a conflict in nearby Georgia,it seems the citizens of that country have cravings for more stable times.

Whether Ms. Tymoshenko his opponent who remains prime minister, would call for mass protests in response, in a repeat of the Orange Revolution remains to be seen.

One scenario could even see the country split in two between Ukrainian speakers in the west who have Ms. Tymoshenko and Russian speakers in the east going for Mr. Yanukovich.
