Tuesday's papers

There are some different perspectives on Gordon Brown's meeting with Labour MP's last night.

Humility wins the day says the Times which reports that

Gordon Brown threw himself on the mercy of his party last night and promised to change the way that he governed as he tackled the crisis of confidence that has engulfed his leadership.

A chastened Gordon Brown yesterday promised his backbench critics that he would learn from his mistakes, as he survived Labour's worst national election results since 1918 and some of the most personal attacks ever mounted on his governing style.
says the Guardian

The Telegraph says that plot ended in failure last night as the Prime Minister's allies were accused of using scare tactics and smears to terrorise Labour MPs and quell the rebellion.

His escape from the rebels' noose came hot on the heels of Labour's dismal performance in the Euro elections which had allowed the far-right BNP to get their first ever seats in the European Parliament
.says the Sun

Meanwhile for the Express

Cowardly Labour MPs last night backed down from their threat to put Gordon Brown out of his – and our – misery.
adding that

They failed to oust the shattered Prime Minister from office – leaving the country to suffer the consequences of facing another year of a Government in total chaos.

The Independent
meanwhile carries as its lead the latest poll which says that

Alan Johnson would deny David Cameron an overall majority at the next general election if Labour ditched Gordon Brown and installed him as prime minister

Finally the Mail looks at another of the days big stories.Under the headline Hallelujah for justice it reports that

It took almost a decade of despair and determination but yesterday the brave Omagh families finally won justice for their loved ones.
In an historic court victory they were awarded more than £1.6million in damages against four Real IRA terrorists who tore their lives apart.
