Monday's papers


The spotlight turns onto Gordon Brown this morning in the papers.

The Guardian reports that in the face of awful polling data over the weekend

the prime minister finally attempted to establish a clear way forward, by proposing a code of conduct for MPs and insisting that he would not step aside, regardless of the scale of defeat for Labour in this week's local and European elections.


The Mail reports that the vultures are circling the Prime Minister

A gang of desperate Labour MPs is plotting to topple Gordon Brown in a grass-roots revolution.
With Cabinet ministers unprepared to act, the threat to his leadership will come from the back benches.


The Chancellor is also under pressure.The Telegraph reveals that he claimed parliamentary expenses for a flat that he let to tenants while also claiming living allowances for his grace and favour home in Downing Street

Alistair Darling was under mounting pressure last night after it emerged that Gordon Brown was considering replacing him as Chancellor with Ed Balls and there were fresh disclosures about his expenses.


Away from domestic politics finally and the Independent reports that Britain's most senior military commanders have warned Gordon Brown that unless he sends more troops to Afghanistan Britain will lose credibility with its American allies

The Sun claims an exclusive this morning

Britain's Got Talent sensation Susan Boyle was in the Priory clinic last night suffering from exhaustion.
The singer, dubbed SuBo, had an "emotional breakdown" following Saturday's final in which she was runner-up.
