Monday's papers

It's the turn of the Tories to come under the expenses spotlight this morning as the Telegraph reports that that Michael Gove and Andrew Lansley “flipped” properties designated as their second homes to claim allowances for multiple properties at taxpayers’ expense.

As a former deputy speaker of the Commons warned a general election may have to be held to resolve the expenses crisis, the Tory leader moved last night to seize the political initiative by apologising for the way his MPs had attempted to maximise their benefits.

The Independent says that

Mr Cameron may come under pressure to rebuke some of his frontbench team. The Tory leader has taken a tough line on “sleaze”, removing the party whip from MP Derek Conway, who employed his eldest son as his Commons researcher when he was a full-time university student. Mr Cameron wanted to curb the outside jobs of his frontbenchers but was beaten off by a Shadow Cabinet revolt.

Meanwhile the Sun reports another slap in the face for the Prime Minister who says the paper

was red-faced again last night after his MAKE-UP tips were left in a taxi by a bungling aide.
The note, among a pile of sensitive documents, told the craggy-faced PM how to apply layers of slap and fake tan.

The Times decides to look elsewhere for its lead this morning as it reports from the Middle East where King Abdullah of Jordon tells the paper that

failure to reach agreement at this critical juncture would draw the world into a new Middle East war next year.
