Sunday papers

One story makes the lead in many of the papers, the eesignation of Damien McBride as one of Gordon Brown's key advisers.

The Telegraph which broke the story yesterday says that

In a major blow for the Prime Minister, Damian McBride quit his post as a senior Downing Street adviser after landing the Government in a row over the messages sent to another prominent Labour figure about the private lives of senior Conservatives.

The Mail says that

No10 brushed off the emails as ‘juvenile and inappropriate’. But with the threat of more damaging disclosures to come, it soon became clear that the clamour for Mr McBride to go would not die down.

The Times reveals the emails

The operation was designed to target David Cameron, the Conservative leader, George Osborne, the shadow chancellor, and three other Tory MPs. The messages from Damian McBride, a long-standing Labour aide, were sent from an official No 10 e-mail address. The unfounded smears suggested: “Putting the fear of God” into Osborne by spreading rumours that he took drugs and had sex with a prostitute. Spreading rumours about the mental health of Osborne’s wife. Challenging Cameron to reveal details of an “embarrassing illness”. Accusing a gay Tory MP of promoting his partner’s business interests in the Commons.

The Observer describes a hamfisted attempt to spread salacious online gossip about the Tories and members of their families which has backfired, threatening Gordon Brown's authority - just as he was basking in a rare upturn in the polls

The Independent meanwhile leads with The uplifting truth about Britain’s youth asi it describes how the media's vilification of all young people is unfounded, and has a damaging effect on young people and society more widely whilst,

Research by the paper has uncovered an army of young people, from all walks of life, who help others and who contribute the equivalent of tens of millions of pounds every year through voluntary work.
