Monday's papers


One story is on tye front of all the papers this morning,Swine flu.

An outbreak of swine flu that has jumped the species barrier from pigs to humans – infecting up to 1,300 people and threatening to cause a global flu pandemic – is likely to arrive in Britain, the scientist who is heading the UK's response said last night.

According to the Guardian,

Jose Angel Cordova, the Mexican health secretary, said suspected swine flu cases in his country had risen to 1,614 including 103 deaths, 22 of which have been confirmed to be linked to the new virus. Tests are being carriedcout on the others. A further 1,614 cases of pneumonia under investigation for links to the virus.


Every passenger arriving in Britain from Mexico is to be tested for signs of swine flu says the Telegraph

Alan Johnson, the Health Secretary, said Britain was on "constant alert" after the previously unknown influenza spread from Mexico to America and cases were reported as far afield as New Zealand, France, Spain, Israel and Canada.


The Times says that

The virus has spread across the border to the United States with at least 20 cases confirmed yesterday, prompting the Obama Administration to declare a public health emergency and release 12 million doses of the anti-viral drug Tamiflu.


According to the Mail it is already here.It reports that Professor Nigel Dimmock, a virologist from Warwick University, said: 'Swine flu could already have reached the UK.

'There really is cause to worry. If it's a new virus no one will have any immunity. It will not be possible to keep it out.'


The Sun reports that hospitals all over Britain were ordered to prepare isolation rooms
