How can the SFO be seen to be independent now

With all the talk of David Miliband, the news that the House of Lords has concurred that the SFO was correct to drop the action against Bae systems has fallen from the radar screen.

At the time the Blair government claimed that any such investigaton would be a threat to national security along with threats from the Saudi government to withdraw cooperation on security.and the cancelling of a £10 billion contract to buy 72 Eurofighter jets from BAE.

Back in April the high court ruled that the decision was in fact unlawful and since that time even Bae acknowledged that the contracts were not quite right. But the Lords have now over ruled that decision unanimously.

The question is now how the Serious Fraud squad can be seen as being politically independent. The squad maintains that these were special circumstances in that they could have security and terrorism implications.
